I have heard the cold/ice and also can happen with plastic food dishes. Not sure why though...

Vets aren't sure why, but many breeds of dogs will lose pigment in their nose during the colder months. Some people once thought that snow nose was caused by bright sunlight reflecting off snow and bleaching the nose (turning it pink or white) - or by a combonation of cold and trauma, since many dogs like using their nose as a mini snow shovel. Vets have found, however, that dogs living in warmer, southern climates can get snow nose too, so weather doesn't appear to be a prime factor. There is no proven way to prevent snow nose, but some breeders say that giving your dogs vitamin E and kelp may help restore the pigment. It's also a very good idea to get rid of plastic feeding bowls and switch to either stainless steel or ceramic bowls, as many dogs are allergic to plastic bowls, which can cause their nose to turn pink or white.
