Valerie Clayton

by Valerie Clayton on 17 March 2014 - 14:03

I just happen to be traveling from Detroit to Chicago and back again today, leaving within the hour.  Huntington is not far off my route, I can pick her up.  My cell is 248-514-7977, let me know if I can help.  -Valerie

Hi Everyone,
My friend, in Canada, definitely wants this dog.  I have left a message with the shelter but they don't open until noon.  I can deliver Lexi part of the way but would certainly appreciate and other assistance that may be offered.  Temporary housing until I can get her would be super.  I live in Bowling Green, KY.  I feel we would need the escape proof crate and will contribute as well.  Please keep me updated and feel free to call if you have info or would like to assist.  I have 2 German Shepherds also, who travel in SUV crates at this time.  If that will suffice, I can transport Lexi in one of those.

Valerie, maybe call the shelter and tell them she has a ride AND an adopter and not to kill her? Since you could pick her up, it would probably be best if you called personally so they'd know it was legit.

Valerie, please call the shelter ASAP. They need to know there are lots of people working to get Lexi a home.

I spoke with Mary and she said Lexi is not yet ready to go to a home.  They want her to go to a rescue first as she has some issues with being timid, and fearful of being crated along with separation anxiety.  Also, there is some cautiousness about her being around men.  Mary says Lexi needs some special training before she can be in a home.  She asked if I could recommend a Rescue that is reputable for providing effective training in behavioral issues.  If you have recommendations, please advise so that I present those to her.  She is very nice to talk to, which sometimes is not the case with shelters. I believe she is doing her best to avoid having her put down.  I left my number to call if anything changes.

Suggestions are welcome!  Any trainers out there who may want to step forward to assist? You will have to provide evidence of ability to Mary, I would imagine.

I know they are in CA, but what about telling them about Westside GSD Rescue? To see if they can help with Lexi?

Betty, bless you for calling and trying.

This kind of thing makes me so angry. This is why people need to breed FOR TEMPERAMENT!! Shy, skittish dogs with nervy temperaments are the first to get dumped for being what they are. Poor dog- she can't help her temperament and being in that environment is only going to exacerbate the issue.

Betty, they are selling a load of horse tuckey. The person you talked to sounds nice and she may mean well, but she has worked at a shelter where killing is considered the "kindest" solution to dog problems and where it is considered "normal" for GSDs to be anxious. She has been informed that Lexi does NOT need a rescue group. Lexi needs a sensible, experienced GSD owner who can take her places and do things with her and act confident and happy around her. Free training has already been offered to the shelter, to be provided to whoever adopts Lexi. Why the shelter thinks Lexi would do better being bounced around in foster homes with people who likely know squat about GSDs or crate escapers is beyond me.

Lexi sounds a bit shy, but for crying out loud she's just been dumped by her owners, and she's in jail with people who are inclined to kill her. No wonder she's anxious! She does not appear to have issues with men other than being more shy (submissive?) around them.

The chance of a rescue group taking Lexi is about zip and the shelter knows it. Rescue groups are always full, and they don't want a dog that is being described (incorrectly) as a huge problem.

I fear that poor Lexi will die. This is just a crime! There are several lifelines available to her, thanks to PDB users, and the shelter has rejected them all.

The only option I can see is to call the shelter director and board members and complain loud and long about this.

This IS the kind of stuff that really DOES piss me off...
You can believe that dog is totally different than what the shelter is portraying. I have had plenty of " sshelter dog experience'. Some should not even be called " humane" societies.
Jonrob, anyway to contact the owner, there are homes for her, now Iit's just a matter of getting her out from under the red tape, that you know, is out there to HELP these poor dogs.
I tell everyone that gets a dog from me, I WILL ALWAYS TAKE MY DOGS BACK....ALWAYS.
I don' t care how old the dog is, what its issues have become, if you no longer want em, bring them back Now I do not say I will buy it back, but I will definitely take it back.
I also say, if life tosses you about some, I will take mine  back until issues get resolved.
I don't EVER want a dog that is here, because of me, to end up in the dog pound or on the streets.
I will also, just as I see several here also, help ANY dog that I can, if it's possible.
Damn I hope red tape don't get in the way here, (more than it already has).
It is terrible how so many people can have a dog for years, than bring them to the pound. I think you at least owe your dog time it takes to find them a suitable home. YUP, there are some selfish people in this world,
BUT, there are also some that are great. To everyone feeling compassion for this girl, and trying to help, I Thank You
