Barbsark, how bout a picture to "ease our worries",
I would live to see her with a happy face, Please...

Jenni:

Thinking

You got it. There's a whole pile of things that don't add up here. Some of which I can't go into yet because I'm still looking into things. It will take a bit of time but for sure I will let the PDB folks know what I find out. You folks have been the best and you deserve the whole story once I have it.

Yes, and with a copy of today's newspaper with the date clearly showing.

Yep, I think most of us here will believe it when we see it.

Good thing she is "shy and timid" and not one of our bold and self-possessed specimens, as we know what that verdict would have been.

Any news or updates? jackie harris

by JonRob on 24 March 2014 - 02:03

Here’s the latest.

First off, the Huntington shelter is substantially though not entirely funded by tax money, including city money, and works as animal control for at least one town. So they are accountable to taxpayers for what they do.

I got a PM from barbsark9 which says she is a retired law enforcement officer who does SAR. I don’t know if it’s really her. She claims she took Lexi from the shelter but keeps spelling Lexi’s name wrong as Lexie. Maybe she just likes that spelling better but maybe she never saw the shelter paperwork with the name spelled Lexi because Lexi never left the shelter with her. This person does not want a free escape proof crate. She did not respond to my reply offering this crate. I gave her a phone number and asked her to call but she has not called. She wants this thread deleted (she told me to cancel my post).

She has some facebook posts that are supposedly about Lexi and some pics that supposedly show Lexi. If you have a facebook account, you can see this stuff after you sign in to facebook:

https://www.facebook.com/barb.beland.5?hc_location=timeline

All of the supposed Lexi outdoor pics are murky and all of them could have been taken just about anywhere, including next to the shelter, and then emailed to anyone. One pic is less murky and looks like it might be Lexi, but there’s no way to tell where or when it was taken. The dog in that pic is standing next to a gravel road, and the Huntington shelter like a lot of places has a gravel road right next to it (you can see this by putting the shelter address into google street view). There are pics of other dogs that she posted that are not murky where you can clearly see the dog. There are two indoor pics of a dog that might be Lexi but the pics are so bad you can’t tell for sure.

If she really has Lexi, why doesn’t she post a clear pic of Lexi inside her home? Why doesn’t she want a free escape proof crate? Those suckers are real expensive so it’s not like she can pick one up cheap at Walmart. Why won't she post a pic and update here instead of telling me to delete the thread?

She says on facebook that Lexi chewed a hole in the chain-link outdoor kennel and then says she will leave Lexi outside when she is away from the house. Click on the facebook night dog photo to see this.

So the pile of stuff that doesn’t make any sense keeps getting higher. You folks will have to make up your own minds. I am not convinced that Lexi made it out of that shelter alive. I hope I am wrong about this.

It would be so easy to show that Lexi is alive and well in a new home by posting a decent indoor pic of her with today's newspaper where she is clearly recognizable but this is not happening.

I wish I had better news. I will do what I can to stay on top of this.

Is there anyone in the Bloomington, Indiana area that knows this person and can find out for sure whether she has Lexi or not?

She is adopted by a SAR person.  Was very scared at first, but started to play some on her leash walk. I think it is great that word got out and this dog found a home!!!

JonRob, I think you are too questioning - not everybody is interested in PDB, and if I were her, I wouldn´t like to verify or proof anything to strangers.

I understand the sceptisum about a kill shelter.   What I don't understand is why it is thought that the shelter would go to these lengths to cover something up; they have better things to do no?  In my experience with shelters, if they put the dog down, they simply no longer communicate about the animal.

This thread is implying that
1. The shelter lied about the potential adopter.  Most shelters simply say the dog is no longer available.
2. The shelter lied about telling people to call back on xxx day to see if the dog is still available.  Why would the shelter bother? Again, much easier to simply say dog no longer available.
3. The shelter lied about Lexi being adopted.  This I can see; kinder PR words than saying the dog was PTS.
4. The shelter has more than 1 poster lying on this thread about the dog being adopted.  Again, why bother?
5.  The shelter then has someone put fake pictures out on Facebook.  Why take the time for this?

Can we not just be happy that Lexi is in a better place?  If she was adopted, fantastic; better life for her.  If she was PTS, I am very sorry, but there are worse fates; look at the thread on Dillon.  Lexi was not staving to death or in pain.

Yes, this is a kill shelter, but unless it is run by truely evil people, all of this negativity could hurt them going forward.  What about the other animals there waiting for adoption?  This negative publicity will hurt them getting homes for the others.

Hired Dog

Since the start of this thread, I have been questioning this "obsession" with this dog, wondering why. Nothing that has been posted in here, after the requisite trying to "one up" from people, has been able to satisfy this person who started this thread.
As far as I know, if you are into saving dogs, there are a few million more Lexis out there waiting, why are you so adamant about THIS dog, what is your connection to her?
If you really want proof, get on a plane, fly out to where this place is and check for yourself, otherwise, quit doubting every single thing everyone said, listen to Suzie and move on.

When a shelter tells lies and inconsistent stories, and refuses to let decent people adopt a dog who is scheduled to be killed, they should expect a lot of questions. Especially if they're using tax money and donations. If Lexi is still alive, she is alive only because PDB users put a spotlight on the Huntington shelter.

If I had adopted Lexi, I would be happy to post a good pic or video. I'm not saying Lexi was killed, I'm saying I have no way of knowing whether she was killed or not. The only person who could answer the question for sure refuses to do so. Which she has a right to do. But if she is a former law enforcement officer, I’ll bet she got real suspicious when she was working and people lied and told inconsistent stories like the Huntington shelter did. And I’ll bet a lot of people thought she asked way too many questions.

There are great shelters but the things some shelters do in secret would make you puke. The Anti-Cruelty Society in Chicago used to take in Pitbulls given up by their owners. They told the Pit owners they would try to find the dog a good home, and then killed the dog before the owner crossed the parking lot. Every one of them. This went on for years. Then a naive volunteer at a rescue group thought one of the group's Pitbulls would be safer at Anti-Cruelty. She lied to Anti-Cruelty and told them that the Pit was hers. She gave the dog to Anti-Cruelty which immediately killed him. The rescue group became "obsessed" with their missing dog, got the story out of the volunteer, and talked to Anti-Cruelty to get their dog back. Anti-Cruelty tried to cover it up and told people they shouldn't be asking questions. Finally, they admitted they had killed the dog, that they were killing all Pits, and that they lied to Pit owners. The whole story made the Chicago Tribune. Anti-Cruelty had to stop taking and killing Pits.

fawndallas, covering up is what shelters do when they get unexpected publicity about a dog they have harmed or killed. If you are convinced that Lexi is safe in a good home, or you think it's OK if she was killed, I would never try to convince you otherwise.

Like I said before, you will all have to make up your own minds.

Hired Dog, why should anyone care about any single dog when millions are being killed? Why should anyone care about Lexi or Dillon or any of the rescue dogs posted here? Why should anyone care about (become “obsessed” with) any one human being who is suffering when there are millions of other people who are suffering?

My girlfriend was asked to help find Lexi a home so I started the thread. Then the Huntington shelter started lying and refusing to let decent people who wanted to save Lexi have her. So the story got bigger than I thought it would. When a shelter acts this badly, you can bet they're doing rotten things to other dogs too. So he story goes beyond Lexi. Making certain shelters stop doing rotten things would save a lot of dogs.

There has been a lot of pressure on shelters during recent years and the result is that a lot of shelters are doing a much better job. You can find a lot of info at:

http://www.nathanwinograd.com/

I think Winograd is too optimistic sometimes but he is right that things can be a lot better for shelter dogs and that making things better often requires asking a lot of questions and a lot of bad publicity.

No one person can save millions of dogs but we can save dogs one at a time. That's why rescue dogs are posted here and other places like facebook. And forcing bad shelters to change can save millions of dogs.

I posted an update only because someone asked for one. I wish I had a happy-happy-happy update to post but I don’t. I am not going to tell people that Lexi is alive and well when I have no proof that this is true.

I won't post about Lexi again unless I find out something definite one way or another.

As for why people focus on one dog, a writer named Loren Eisley explained it better than I can:

“While wandering a deserted beach at dawn, stagnant in my work, I saw a man in the distance bending and throwing as he walked the endless stretch toward me. As he came near, I could see that he was throwing starfish, abandoned on the sand by the tide, back into the sea. When he was close enough I asked him why he was working so hard at this strange task. He said that the sun would dry the starfish and they would die. I said to him that I thought he was foolish. There were thousands of starfish on miles and miles of beach. One man alone could never make a difference. He smiled as he picked up the next starfish. Hurling it far into the sea he said, "It makes a difference for this one." I abandoned my writing and spent the morning throwing starfish.”
