YR you're preaching to the choir.  That was exactly my point.  When I saw the cattle prod used it was NOT out of anger or frustration.  It was not even being used as a correction or to keep a dog "clean" when guarding.  My point was I've seen tools that are used as "every day" things (like a Fursaver) being abused out of anger and frustration.  I personally would not use a cattle prod, but in the case where I saw it done I would not call it abuse.

I personally have seen it used in the hold and bark. To me that IS animal abuse. There is NO REASON to use a cattle prod on a dog. I a so called trainer feels they need to use one then they are NO TRAINER in my book. The guy who I saw use one, had also been in SchH for a long time and competed at Regional and National level. I told him that if he came ANYWHERE near my dog with the cattle prod I would use it on him.

Needless to say, he did come close to me or my dog with it...lol.

just waiting for the knowledgable people to chime in and state how it is just a tool yadadada or even better an epic justification that by the time you finish reading it you will be convinced the dog enjoys it, how about the don't judge until you have tried it defence, or what would you know yr just a newb, the X trainer uses it and s/he competed at nationals how many titles you got line.......

i have been on the dog forums too long (since 2010), it's all getting so samey.

If the sport of Schutzhund is a test of the GSD breed, to prove their worthiness in protection, tracking, and obedience, why would a tool such as a cattle prod be used?  Why would any abuse be involved, the dog is either capable of the work or it isn't. It is my personal opinion that many use these abusive methods to try to make the dog mean, more aggressive, defeating the entire purpose of what the sport was intended for.  There would NEVER be a time that my dog would be abused or have a cattle prod on them ever, for the sake of being more protective, or more obedient. If you need a cattle prod to train a German Shepherd, perhaps you shouldn't be training!  My opinion, and I stand by it!

As usual the ignorance and emotional BS abounds.

I know of one instance in which it was used to clean up a very STRONG male.  A somewhat well known dog infact. Watching his videos or trials you would have no clue.  Forward, aggressive and confident, the type of dog that would eat most of the BSers alive..lol.

For those that want to use stories like this as an excuse to avoid IPO, do us all a favor and stay off the field there are enough "wonder trainers" in the sport watering it down as it is.

by ZeekBoy on 03 April 2014 - 04:04

Not ignorant, emotional, yes, if you need a cattle prod to train a GSD, something is wrong!

by vk4gsd on 03 April 2014 - 04:04

haz, typical IPO, close minded completely and ignorant that there is a rest of the world out there that you are increasingly distanced from.

soon enough there will be only 1 person left on the trial field and then they will become extinct as well, how many newbs have stayed long enough to trial their dog, the more members you don't have you think it is a testament to your high standards and elite level.

need to get yr head and yr butt connected together again and smell the roses.
