By changeing to the FCI standard, all the work breeders have put into making trotting dog (mostly incapeable of work) would have to be be redirected to producing a more balanced dog.

Why, Kim? What does the FCI standard say that makes you say that?

GUIDELINES

FOR THE

INTERNATIONAL UTILITY DOG TRIALS

AND THE

INTERNATIONAL TRACKING DOG TRIAL

OF THE FCI

the FCI is the internation holder of dog breed standards and trial regulaitons.
Each kennel club from which a dog is developed is allowed to submit that breed standard to become the international standard....
Austrailian Shepherd FCI standard comes from Austrailian Kennel club
Poodle FCI standard come from French Kennel club.......and so on.

German Shepherd FIC standard comes from German Kennel Club (SV). Germany has developed breeding requirements for the GSD, including certain health testing, and trialing.... The FCI is refering to the German system for titling the dog.

Which is the link i supplied.

Section  1 –Section  1 –Sheepdogs With working trial..

That means the dog needs to pass a working trial? Seriously? Where does it state what a working trial is and what is required to pass it? It doesn't even say "sheepdogs with a working trial title". Any links that would help a dummy like me get it?

GSD Lineage

by GSD Lineage on 21 June 2014 - 22:06

So, my understanding is that GSDCA adopts AKC standard and refuses to switch to FCI standard. My question is, what would change if GSDCA switched to FCI standard?

Ibrahim

I think like  ILMDNothing would change, the standards are practically identical right now. However, the standards have changed from the past. I don't remember the overangulation part of the FCI standard, but surely it was done in responce to some modern dogs and that trait. I wonder what year they added that. (Year anyone?)

Despite the standard if the populations of GSDs are not interbred, then they will naturally develop differences. This has happened with most populations kept seperate, despite identical selective preassure

Sitasmom,

All the accepted working FCI working trial for German shepherd dogs involve the dog biting a human/decoy. I am told The AKC will not allow any. I'm not even sure that a police demonstration would be allowed. No standard or breed would matter, it just is not allowed. However, that could be a requirement for getting special colored papers or an award, but not really part of the standard.

On the other hand, this thread is about the standard, and if no GSD with a title or in FCI countries ever suffered from over angulation, then why would the FCI bother to put that in their standard?

by Blitzen on 21 June 2014 - 22:06

OK I think I get it now - the FCI actually means the GSD is a member of the group that is composed of "sheepdogs that have passed working trials"? Is that right.

I found this on the net http://www.fci.be/uploaded_files/28-2013-annex-en.pdf.

I can't argue anymore that the FCI standard isn't better because it does ask for a proof or working ability. I guess Zdog was right, I am dense.  I think that would be a plus for the breed in the long run. BUT GSDCA can't enact it even if they wanted to because AKC won't allow any dog sport that involves a dog biting anything. Maybe that's why the GSDCA said they won't agree to use the FCI standard? What other AKC breeds use an FCI standard? Still both standards describe the same dog conformation wise so the only part the GSDCA could not enact due to AKC regs would be the part that says "sheepdog with working trial"? Would AKC even approve an FCI breed standard?

by Blitzen on 21 June 2014 - 22:06

As far as overangulation goes have you people taken a long hard look at the latest Va dogs?

by SitasMom on 21 June 2014 - 22:06

In Germany GSD's can obtain a breed survey with - BH (basic obedience and temperament test), HGH (herding title), passing hips/elbows, and correct dentition.

by Blitzen on 21 June 2014 - 22:06

So they don't need an IPO title to get a breed survey in Germany? Is it the same here?

by SitasMom on 21 June 2014 - 22:06

AKC recognizes working titles.........tell me again why they cannot agree to GSDCA adopting FCI standards?

Effective December 31, 2009 the AKC started recording Working Dog titles earned in events held by existing organizations, if requested by a breed Parent Club. The organization must be approved by the AKC Performance Events Department. Titles to be recorded require Board approval. The recording of the title on an AKC pedigree will be done at the request of the dog’s owner for a fee set by the AKC.

In addition, AKC clubs will be permitted to invite the other organization to hold its Working Dog event in conjunction with the AKC club’s AKC event, as long as it is clear in the publicity that the former is being held under the auspices of another organization.
