Western Rider

That dog is in China it may or may not have been bred according to the standard for GSD's in China.  It might not even be a registered GSD in China

so there is no point in worrying about it.  Dogs in China rarely ever leave their land so it should have very little influence over others.

I have never seen a dog this far from the FCI standard anywhere other than in kennels and Ads from China.  They have imported many GSd's that do not look like this  so again not sure if they are Registered GSD's or what some kennels breed and have their own registry for them like the Shiloh  shepherds.

This is like so many breeds that man has interfered with that can no longer breed naturally or even give birth without help. Then there are those that have been bred so that they can barely breath so can do no exercise and cannot handle any kind of stress or heat.

WR - so yr saying any country can make up their own standard and still be a gsd???

hoping the savvy show peeps will post examples of what wins in internationally sanctioned shows in chinses show ring or state if they even follow international sanctions/standards ie SV, FCI.....etc.

in fairness this trend may be limited to special tastes (not using that word loosely), this could well be the equivalent of the specialist gsd panda breeders/blue/liver etc breeders in the US or as WR says an analog of the shilo offshoot. may not represent a general trend amongst the better chinese breeders.

kitkat, for every culture we may look down upon for breeding practices and usage you will find a 100 people from the culture doing the looking down many willing to send them dogs hand over fist .. if  the price is right so lets not get to uppity.

VK we have an FCI standard here in the USA yet look at your title of this topic. ASL's  could be a similar situation in China.  They may not be GSD registered or maybe and like the ASL it is different from the FCI standard.

China for many years had GSD's but did not import that many dogs so things may have evolved to this then when they started importing more dogs and many VA dog and top placing young dogs they now have what we have here in the USA. Two types of German Shepherds as well and they may have just as much fighting there as we have here over it.

No it is not for me.  Many years ago I heard several breeders talking at a Sieger show about what they wanted to import and what they were asking for, big bones and extra heavy large heads. Again not for me.  I don't win at the shows don't have the type but mine can run all day with the horse in the hills and dessert and go out the next day as well and make me feel safe.

Can one of you clever souls provide a link for the whole thred we had on the Chinese GSD

scene and those 'orrible heads, a few months back ?   This technophobe hasn't worked

out how to do that yet,  but Pete might find it interesting to see, having raised this one.

Ghastly, butt ugly, shameful, disgusting, and pitiful are a few words that come to mind when having to observe that picture.  I have seen pictures of the sickening animals before unfortunately.

Certainly. These dogs have come up in numerous discussions on FB recently, so I have saved that link. Most people can't believe they are actually purebred, but, unfortunately, they ARE. There is a trend towards heavy, jowly heads with lots of loose skin in SV circles right now, and the Chinese are buying thise dogs, and breeding for even larger heads. Countries in the Middle East have also followed this trend. And what REALLY, REALLY concerns me is how many people in these countries comment "What a BEAUTIFUL dog!"  Omg Smile

German shepherd from Egypt...not nearly as bad as the Chinese dogs, but it's getting there...  What Smile

What the Chinese managed to do in ONE generation with a V-rated, KKl1, SV registered dog, which was praised for its strong, masculine head:

A friend of mine posted a picture of this dog on FB, criticizing it for its severely apple-domed skull, and received many comments saying how BEAUTIFUL other people thought the dog was. Even when she posted the description of the head from the breed standard, they still continued to say what a gorgeous head this dog had. She also received some very, very nasty PMs from several people!

There is a GREAT need for education as to what a correct GSD looks like...  Sad Smile (Never mind the apple domed skull, I'm sure there are many of you who can spot quite a few other faults in this dog, such as flat, splayed feet, steep croup, etc.) And the SV needs to STOP promoting dogs with huge, jowly, lippy heads, excess stop, and apple-domed skulls!!

One only needs to look at the way heads on male V rated GSD's have changed over the years and it's not hard to  see where's it's all heading. Bye bye patent airways, almond shaped eyes, parallel skulls and muzzles. Hello Akita like heads, dangling flews, round eyes, and dogs that huff and puff like freight trains when gaiting around the ring.

There's lots of interpretation in the FCI standard left up to the judges. For years the WDA and USCA clubs have brought the German judges over to allow the American breeders the opportunity to breed the SV style dog. If breeders want to follow the breed the way Germany does, just stay on top of the tends and follow their example. Otherwise the world is full of other examples of German Shepherds.

Well vk...I am NOT one of them, and sadly it is true that the mighty buck usually wins...

When it comes to my dogs, I'm worse than a concerned parent of a teen when it comes to who they can date,

(and they could not date any of the above). I'm of those people that many complain about with the limitations I put on a dog I sell. I don't care, you don't just get to walk off with one of my pups to do as you please with them once the cash hits my palm.
