Since some posters have become so rapt with Dictionary Definitions of late, here is another one people might like to take into consideration:

[Websters]

"Provoke:

1 a - (archaic) to AROUSE, STIR   b - to incite to anger : INCENSE

2 a - to call forth : EVOKE  b - to stir up purposely : INDUCE

c - to provide the needed stimulus for : OCCASION

synonyms  PROVOKE, EXCITE, STIMULATE, PIQUE,

QUICKEN - mean to arouse as if by pricking. PROVOKE directs attention to the response called forth, and most often

applies to an angry or vexed reaction;  EXCITE implies a stirring up or moving profoundly;  STIMULATE suggests a rousing out of lethagy, quiesence or indifference;  PIQUE

suggests stimulating by mild irritation or challenge;  QUICKEN implies beneficially stimulating and making active or lively.  see in addition IRRITATE."

(Hhmmm, don't see anything about 'stalking' in there.)
