blue bi looks just like any other bi,  except the black takes on a look of a flea powder dusted dog.

But a bicolor puppy is almost solid black, so perhaps a blue bicolor would look solid blue at birth?

That was also my thoughts but the the saddle would override the Bi colour, so in genetic theory you wouldn't get a bi colour out of that mating, not a melanistic bi - not one that would appear practically black at birth.

There was obviously a reason the two silver/blue pups died - the one born moribund was very dead and had been for a while and I believe that was what set her off early, she delivered them at 57/58 days.

Maybe there was something else going on that wasn't visible, maybe something went wrong.

For me it will always reamain a puzzle, but it does make me keep an open mind, on the dominant black angle, even though I would have to see it with my own eyes to believe it.

I know this topic was started and ended long ago but just stumbled on it while digging through my pups sires comments and following links from there. First off the BlueDogs site is my site.   Second another stud did NOT get to "Lady Delila VII". I know this because the AKC would not issue papers on the pups until a DNA test had been performed since the breeding took place while Zidane's paperwork was still in process. Once everything came back A-Ok the paperwork was issued, I received my puppy paperwork in the mail and registered "Smokey" one of the solid blue pups online with the AKC as "Blue Sapphire's Touch of Gray".

Once his paperwork arrives he shall be entered into the Pedigree database. His solid blue sister was sold on a spay\neuter contract on limited registration in case any of you are wondering. The American bitch has been spayed and re-homed. Seriously though, after reading this thread if anybody has any questions regarding the blue or liver genes, or even color genetics in general please feel free to contact me. I've been studying canine color genetics since 1999.

Sorry it took me so long to reply. I have had some serious health problems this past month. Since my host server is being a pain and not allowing me to directly post photos here I have slapped some photos up on a temporary page on one of my domains for the purposes of two threads I have been involved in. Below the first two photos which apply to the other thread, there are photos of an Isabella pup, and then two different blue bi-colors. If I had more time I would dig around my hard drive and find more but for now this will have to do.

Are blues and livers found to be genetically linked to certain illnesses, or not?

only condition associated with the blue/isabella color would be CDA.  and there are tests to show carriers, and dogs affected are easily removed from breeding programs.

But in general no, there is no genetic condition caused by, or associated with these colors.

individual dogs can have problems, but not because of the color they were born.  the problem these colors do have is from disreputable breeders trying to cash in on a "rare" color and not caring about health, temperment, or anything else as long as they can produce these colors.

Its not fair to group everyone who chooses to work with these colors in the same category, as there are quite a few breeders trying very hard to improve teh quality and health of the lines with these colors.

Thank you Uber Land, I was gone all day and just now checking back on the boards. You're answer is exactly what I would have said.

would love to hear about that isabella pup and where he came from!  beautiful bones and head on him.  one of the best pictures/representative of an isabella I have seen.

a friend of mine had 2 chihuahua sisters that were isabella in color.  one was literally a lavender/light purple color, the other looked pink!
