Epilepsy is a topic that has been thrown into many threads as a health issue, particularly when Alsatianists are mentioned. Now the subject has been thrown into the arena regarding a stud dog with all German bloodlines and, despite many viewings (276 in the last 24 hours) the response is silence.

When a breeder of many years experience who is also a UK judge, an international judge and a BREED SURVEYOR makes comments to identify an animal he says is responsible for epilepsy, then that person must give the basis for his comment. In the absence of such a response and, a lack of comment from the rank and file then it would appear that epilepsy is a problem not worth the time of day.

All the comments that I have read talking about our “beloved breed” are just empty words.

Mackenzie, while i agree with most of what you say i must add why would you think anyone would have to come here to make a statement? This is a chat room, a forum, one of many, it is not the be all and end all of GSD info. I can't help thinking you are a little bit miffed at not being privy to what actually goes on in the "real" world of the gsd. Maybe if you would get off your computer, depending on this place for info, and get physically involved in the real issues you would know more of what is actually going on. I do not know many who would want to put themselves or there dogs through the gauntlet of this place.

The only statement that I am looking for either on this forum, or, anywhere else is one from Davey Hall regarding his alleged statement on epilepsy and the dog that he is alleged to have named.  That information, if you have not already realised is important to all breeders.   Other than that point I agree with you that the forum is for comment and discussion which is not forthcoming on this particular topic.

Your comment regarding being privy to what goes on in the real world of the GSD hits the nail right on the head.   The real world of the GSD is shrouded in secrecy.  Please tell me why information regarding the terrible disease of epilepsy should be privy to a selected few when it can affect everyone.  Further, I do not rely on this forum for information and I am better informed than you realise.  I am also  a member of the SV and the SVÖ and have been for a long time.   Years, in fact.

I have never, in the past suggested that anyone puts their dog through the gauntlet of this place.  However, please note that the alleged comment from Davey Hall is about a dog not owned by him.  I for one expect that a comment made by the Vice Chairman of the Breed Council on this particular topic to be clarified in a responsible manner.

Mackenzie  have you asked the Germans the same question or does Epilepsy, as Sheila says, only exist this side of the channel?

In answer to A Shepherd's question, I wrote to the SV on 30/1/2010 and I am awaiting a response.

If an animal has only all German blood then the problem must be in Germany and, therefore, a worldwide problem.   Readers that have read all of the posts rather than just the last one or two will realise that.

Perhaps I should ask the question put to me.   What has A Shepherd and all the many readers that have visited this site been doing since the news first broke on this forum?   What has the Breed Council been doing to  encourage their  Vice Chairman to make a statement as to the basis on which his alleged statement was made?  Who have the Breed Council contacted to get to  the root of the question i.e.  Has epilepsy been discovered from this prominent bloodline in Germany or the far corners of the world?

Mackenzie what you asked was for Mr Hall to come on here and declare all he knew, I asked if you would ask the Germans the same question. Your reply is as expected, so why not write to Mr Hall, the BC etc  or do you only show respect to Germans?

A Shepherd

I have not asked Davey Hall to come on here and declare all he knows.  I have asked that he informs everyone of the basis of the alleged comments that he made.   The vehicle that he uses to provide that information is up to him and, I think, that as the Vice Chairman of the Breed Council there is a duty upon him to do so.   As for respect,  I have  always  been respectful on this forum and I will  continue to be so.   As for being respectful to the Germans I have always  been so,  although I have also been at loggerheads with the SV in the past and I will pursue them in this matter should they come up short.

I have answered your questions and perhaps, if you want to make this a meaningful  discussion, you will answer mine set out in my last post.  That would be respectful.

Would it not make sense for the Breed Council to approach the KC and the RCVS and set up a scheme with vets to feed back information back into the breed and report all epilepsy cases?  If people are really serious about tackling epilepsy, would that not be a move worth thinking about???

a shepherd-bazza.
you both strike me as having the " not in my back yard syndrone ", or friend of mr hall maybe ?
sadly where money is concerned-silence is golden !

by PATTERSON on 03 February 2010 - 17:02

Having read all the above posts Mr. Hall should make some sort of public announcement to clear up any questions, which have been asked, I think not as in the past HOPE IT GOES AWAY.
