by Fida on 30 December 2004 - 09:12

My four yr old male GSD seems to limp in the left leg when winter comes. This is gone again by spring. He did hurt himself a around 2 weeks back while retrieveing the stick but when he runs he doesnt seem to have problem only when he walks is the limp there and only in the left hind leg. Is this a muscular problem or a problem with the hips. Im asking cos there r no p[roper facilities that allow for xraying dogs in my country and even the vet is confused due to his limited knowledge. Plz Help Fida

Dear Fida, it could be anything. Considering your vet circumstances, try & keep your dog quiet for a couple of weeks. No running/jumping/stairs, etc. etc. etc. Just short, on leash only, walks. No pain killers at this time either. Give him this rest for 2 weeks & see if he improves. Unfortunately, nobody can diagnose over the internet. Hope he gets better soon. By the way, I have a dog who is lame in a hind leg. In the house he seems so crippled but when outside in the yard he moves very well. I DON'T KNOW WHY!

Also Fida, I have arthritis & when the weather is cold, it hurts much more than usual. He may have arthritis in his left hip. Sorry I can't help. Good luck.
