My female has a pronounced bitch strip. My male got one too....AFTER I had him neutered! Before that, his back was as black as could be, which is why I'm sure the stripe is due to hormonal changes:

Before:

After: He'd just had his belly shaved for an ultrasound of his prostate. Even after neutering, he was still having problems with leaking urine. He strill dribbles a wee bit from time to time, but otherwise everything is okay!  This was about 6 months post-neutering.

Here's Star as a puppy. Even at that young age, you could see the bitch stripe!

The bitch stripe shows up a lot in the showline females.  Just peruse the thousands of photos on this web site and you'll see many examples.  I have not seen the  bitch stripe as pronounced or as often in Workingline black&tan females.  Of course, many workingline females are sables and either show no stripe at all, or have even a darker stripe down their back instead of the washed out stripe seen in the black&reds.

I would not expect a correlation between spay/neuter and the development of the stripe, but I suppose the hormonal changes could precipitate some sort of change in some dogs.  Perhaps some more folks can comment on their own experiences with this.

I have always heard that kind of color referred to as "salt and pepper" back.  ecs

My WL female was spayed after first heat. Blanket black. No bitch stripe.

is this stripe considered just another color, or is it a fault?

I don't think it is a fault, I would think it is lumped in with pigment (or color...I know they are different not really sure how though).  Some dogs and bitches are more "salt and pepper" throughout their saddle, some not at all, and some more along the top than the sides making the bitch stripe.  Seems like if a bitch stripe was a fault, than also any dog with salt and pepper throughout would be a fault, and that would be a LOT of dogs!
