I realize that this subject deserves a fresh thread. After researching this site and many others (like dogfoodanalysis.com), I have come to learn much:

1. Every dog is different and so each will react differently to the same food tested.
2. Raw works well for some but not others.
3. Diamond Company is a huge monopoly, is involved with TOTW and Solid Gold (both respected foods) and many others. Diamond has had some bad news surrounding it over the past years.
4. Origen consistently ranks high among users and is independent.

So, I am now looking at and considering Origen, Wysong, and Fromm since these are independently owned companies with no connection to Diamond and have had good reviews.

I am also considering pre-mixes like Dr. Harvey's Canine Health. I am wondering if some have added cooked meats instead of raw to these types of mixes.

I realize that this subject has already been covered, but with things ever changing, it seems important to revisit it regularly.

Please give me your thoughts on this and let me know of any poor experience with those mentioned above.
thanks

From experience Orijen and Fromm are good foods. I have never heard anything bad about Wysong. I have maybe bought a can or two of it.
I also, just this morning, tried Acana. It is also made by Champion (Orijen). It is a lower protein (but, not low protein) version of Orijen. I am trying it because I like their food, but, feel Orijen is a little high in protein and fat for some of my older, less active dogs.
My Am Staff mix was so excited about getting to eat the Acana (it smelled very good) that he drooled all over my leg. He is not a drooler.
As SitaMom said, dogfoodanalysis.com is good place to look for info.
I also recommend this site. www.dogfoodproject.com
It will teach you a lot about dog food and allow you to make more informed decisions.
It will actually teach you a lot about food/nutrition in general.
I hope this helps!

Do more research on Raw feeding.  Look up the 4 D's that go into dry dog food.  I switched to raw three years ago and will never go back.  I have 20 years experience in the pet industry and will never feed my dogs dry dog food again.  My dogs have never done better since the switch to raw.  It is a little more work, a little more expensive, but my dogs are worth it.  When you compare the muscle tone, energy level, and overall health of my dogs to other working dogs fed kibble you can clearly see the difference.  My vet was amazed at my 10 year old females blood work during her annual physical recently.

If we didnt have 5 GSDs then I would think about feeding raw. All the dogs I have seen on it look great. If you are looking for a good kibble, then I would recommend Solid Gold or Natural Balance. They are both very good foods.

 Slamdunc,

You responded right after my last question - has anyone tried Wysong Archetype -  and said "do more research on raw". Wysong Archetype is a raw food using the cold processed TNT technology. Have you tried this?? With all your experience in the pet industry, you would have a valuable opinion - please tell me what you think about this product.

I have not not tried the Wysong foods, but they have a very good reputation.  Years ago I did try Solid Gold Hundeflocken and was not happy with the results.  The food then was low in fat (8% if I remember correctly) and all of my dogs lost weight, blew their coats and lost muscle tone.  I tried it for about 3 months and was feeding my male 8 cups per day and females 6 cups just to keep their weight up.  I actually met the owner at a couple of industry trade shows and decided to switch foods.    That was 7 or 8 years ago, I know there are several people on here that like the food, but it didn't work well for me.
