I have only heard very good thing regarding the Kuehns.
Also, you may want to check out
http://www.hollowhillsgsd.com/hh.html   in Northern PA. Beth is very nice and extremely knowledgeable.

Sheesh, Beth is great and very knowledgeable.  She has a very nice breeding program there.  If you are interested in a show line dog she is someone you should definitely check out.

There are some very nice smaller kennels in the East coast. It is worthwhile to look deeper than national advertising.
I would add von der Blauen Bergen, Monroe Haus, vom Traumhof, all have good dogs at decent prices, very good reputations.
Most of my best dogs over the years, winners, came right, straight out of somebody's laundry room, basement and backyard. Most have a website, yes, but not fancy and not regularly updated. They are probably too busy with the dogs, jobs, and not big enough to hire a pro web developer? Fine with me.

i want to sincerely thank all of you for your recommendations and references. I enjoyed visiting the many web sites and I am building a spreadsheet on the kennels/contact information and plan to contact / visit and research each one of them as soon as the kids finish with school. We are very anxious to add a German Shepherd  pup to our family but I am dedicated to doing my homework. I hope to meet many/all of you at a future event. Again thank you so much for your recommendations.

Its good to see somebody researching carefully their selection. My advice to any newbie is to narrow it down to one or two litters, then let your heart (and your training director if you are planning to do the sport- LOL) make the final decision.

The best litters are quite consistent in type and temperament, some variation in puppy size, structure, coat color/texture, but temperaments nearly the same at 8 -10 weeks, hard to make a decision. That's the sign of a good breeder. (or a lucky one!) The pups all tend to normalize in size as they grow up if the litter is bred well, maybe 5 lbs difference and a centimeter in height, by gender, so I don't pay so much attention to size as pups as some people do. I would avoid litters in which pups are all over the board according to the above, almost look like they had different daddies.

Good luck,
SS
