Tomorrow (Thursday) a significant canine health report will be announced by Sir Patrick Bateson. The Bateson report has been jointly commissioned and funded by the Kennel Club and Dogs Trust. It is expected to contain far reaching recommendations regarding the best practice for helping bring canine health in to the 21st century. The report comes hot on the heels of two other recent studies in to dog health, namely the APGAW report and the RSPCA funded study. Both previous studies drew similar conclusions and endorsed the message broadcast by the BBC documentary, Pedigree Dogs Exposed. The Bateson report, part-funded and commissioned by The Kennel Club, is set to create even bigger headlines. You can read the report here.Sign up to our e-Alert service to be one of the first to receive details of the Bateson report in to canine health.

Professor Sir Patrick Bateson is president of the Zoological Society of London.

Speculation is rife in today’s national media that Professor Bateson’s report is expected to recommend that The Kennel Club should not be allowed to run dog shows as well as regulate the dog breeding industry.

Last week, Professor Bateson said: ‘I think regulation is the only way to do it. The public need to insist they know the pedigree of a dog and that it has been properly looked after, and only go to accredited breeders.’

This would come as a huge blow to the Kennel Club who insisted that they were best placed to ‘regulate’ canine health in the wake of the firestorm caused by Pedigree Dogs Exposed
.

Details of the Bateson report will be published here K9 magazine on Thursday January 13th.
