SAJID

Be careful with this one.  I am not saying that your vet is wrong, that would be foolish of me, but plenty of people here with lots of knowledge and experience will tell you that its not a simple diagnosis for one, and its a much used term for a limping GSD by lots of vets.

If you are in the UK - there is a system of your plate being scrutinised and coming back with a mean score of numbers to tell you how your dogs hips are and we never or rarely go with the vet having a look at the plate and stating HD.   Your vet has obviously not left you with any info on it, which makes me more suspicious.

There is no medication IF it is that diagnosis, and a generalisation of the current treatment is not now to hold back on exercise regularly, so that the muscles build up around the joint.   You have to be careful with this.  Exercise hard for once weekly, and you will get a very stiff in pain dog - exercise not at all, and you will get an overweight painful dog, but daily good exercise to build muscle to keep the joint tighter is now the current thought on it I have heard.

First of all, find out in your country what is the current check that can be done to find out exactly, and send your Xray plate to the people that are the experts.   I am not trying to decry your vet, but seems to me, that if you have such an instant diagnosis, and have not been given any plan for the dog then your info has not been full and complete from the vet.  Might be not H.D.
Keep it touch and let us know, and all the best with the dog.  What exactly did the vet do to find the diagnosis, and what future did he give for you for plans.?  Have a look on the Videx website, there is lots of information regarding both the UK system and Penn hip system and hips in general in the GSD.   Mo.  Mascani.

i too thought the same as yu mo when i read the original post.i had a young dog scored a just over a year who said that the plates did not look good....score 5-3.then years later the same vet told me that the x rays on a bitch of approx 3 yrs were excellent and recommended me to send for scoring?????.always sent them off to BVA regardless of how they looked.the resulting score.....8-8.so see Sajid vets dont know how to score tho.some do have idea of approx.what the score may be.even if your male does have HD on one leg,it doesnt mean he wont have a long quality of life.i had a male who was x rayed at about the same age as your male......one hip looked dislocated,it was well out of the socket.on x.ray at 1 yr.score came back....3-45.this male lived to 13yrs,only had trouble with his hip from about 10-11 yrs and only in the winter/early spring months when it was cold and damp.rest of the time he ran around the field playing happily with my other gsds.he was put to sleep aged 13 yrs because he had a torsion.if your shepherd is diagnosed with HD,i would suggest swimming at a canine hydropool and as mo said regular gentle excercise.is he only limping on that one leg or does the limping shift from one leg to another as it could be pano.(growing pains).and i believe with this condition your pup should be rested.no doubt if i,m wrong about pano.someone will tell yu.Carolesorry Sajid in the uk,the lower the numbers the better it is and each score should be as even as possible so yu see the animal the vet said was bad was indeed very good but the 2nd animal were the vet said was excellent were in fact fair and worse than the 1st dog.good luck with him.Carole S.

Some times Pups will show more pain if they do have HD during the  growth phase, often once past this phase and the joints settled and secured the dog returnes to relitive normality, I have had 2 dogs  diagnosed with early HD the worst was at 4mths,X-rayed at 12 mths the plates came back with a 76 total, after this dog reached 15mths it never ever suffered from his hips, and with regular exercise and swimming would clear a 6ft scale in a bound.
As the others have suggested, good exercise and a good weight is the key to maintaining  dysplastic dogs,
If the pup is experiencing pain ask your vet to give you something , Often Metacam is given, hope pup improves
