My female had a litter.  Long story short, lost 7 1 survived .  Mom tried to kill the pup.  We fed the survivor milk replacer for puppies.  This can be bought at Wal-Mart.  The down side is that for the first few weeks they must be fed every 2 hours.  Believe it or not, we had to hire a puppy sitter during our work hours.  Every night we took turns feeding the pup at ungodly hours.  I would not want to do this knowing before hand that I would have to do the same for 8 puppies.  It also made it more difficult to part with the puppy when it was time to go to his new home.

First off let me state that I have no knowledge or experience with this condition.

however I am curious to know if it could possibly be diet related.  Since milk production is heavily dependant on diet.  Maybe there is a common chemical found in food that the dam isn't breaking down correctly or maybe having a minor  immune response to. Even things that can be relatively unnoticeable in her can be detrimental to the puppies.

These are usually bacteria related and so "infection" in the milk ducts.   When the diet is off with calories, calcium etc, the milk production simply is less.
