He-ya everyone,

I'm new to this messageboard and I had a few questions regarding training.

What's a good time to start working the puppy? at what age would be appropriate to start it? I am new to this and I do not want to put a lot of stress on the puppy at a young age. Also, how do you start training and preparing a puppy? Any help or information would be appreciated. If anyone knows a web-site or articles please feel free to post it so I can read more about it.

One more thing when getting the puppy at 8 weeks old. How do you start with him getting familiar with other dogs and people and also expose him to different sounds, and strange places?! Do I start right away or do I wait a little bit? I do not want to scare the puppy or expose him to early and mess up his nerves and how long do I let him be pet? and how should I let him play with other dogs? Thank you for the help, it is appreciated!!

What are you going to train the dog to do?  Schutzhund?  Show?  Pet?  Herding?

Hi
My concern is why did not the breeder give you this information!!!!

by happyday on 23 June 2009 - 18:06

Myfanwy - will all do respect - most breeders are just that - Breeders - I am not saying that alot of breeders dont have knowledge in training - but if they are in the business to breed - they don't give a class on training your pup....

So this is a question asked by a person that got a pup from a Breeder - not a trainer.

I put my two cents on the other forum,
Double posting kinda sucks.

From your post on the general board I see you plan to do schutzhund with the puppy.  If I were you I would be going to the clubs around you to find the one that will be the best fit for you and your pup.  Talk with the experienced , accomplished  members about how they raise their puppies.   These people will be able to give you hands-on advise on the right way to play with (AKA teach) your schutzhund prospect puppy.

Personally, with  8 week old pups, I don't let strangers (2 legged or 4 legged) play with or touch my pups, and I supervise all activity with those who aren't strangers.  I do not want another dog to "cow" my pup, which is very easy for an adult dog to do to a pup and can happen in an instant,  & I really only let my friends & their kids pet my pup as long as is necessary to be polite.  I don't take puppies off my property until they have had all their shots.

Happyday,
Firstly let me say I am not 'having a go at the new owner'
But I breed and will always ask a purchaser why they want a puppy and find out what they know about GSDs so I can help them care for and give the puppy a good start.
Breeders bring new life to this world in the form of puppies and have a responsibility to make sure they go to good homes and are not sold to just anyone by asking questions, and if the buyer can not satisfy the breeder they should not sell them the puppy.
I give all my new owners a puppy pack with as much information regarding the first 12 months ie; feeding, basic training, house training and a promise to help re-home if they do not want it for any reason.
If breeders feel they cannot follow these principles they should not breed.

I like to start training the first time I can get my hands on a pup . Even if its 5 seconds old. LOL .Really I would be training it from the second I got my hands on it . Training comes in many forms ,It starts early and never ends .. And I agree with what suenic said .

Hold on, I don't think that just because someone is asking questions on a message board means their breeder  did not give them any advise on puppy rearing.  Just as easily, the OP is  looking for different opinions or just more advise, or perhaps the breeder was not able to give advise specific to raising a pup for sport.  Lots of people ask for advise on message boards regarding the raising and training of puppies regardless of their breeders advise or lack thereof.

Anyways, what's important (at least in my opinion),  is the OP is excited about the new pup, wants to do schutzhund, and wants to do it right.
