looking thru fb at some comments about the politics of dog showing. politics its not politics its cheating, and we are all to blame for this, there is no point going on about it and then doing nothing,is it not about time that we all stood together on this and wiped it out of our hobby, because if we dont it wont be to long before nobody goes to shows anymore.

How about showing a bit of sportsmanship?

CANINE TERMINOLOGY - SPORTSMANSHIP

13th in a series - compiled by J. Seltzer

Sportsmanship has been defined as: the conduct and attitude considered as befitting participants in sports, especially fair play, courtesy, striving spirit, and grace in losing. As one of the oldest sports in this country, the Sport of Dogs has a long tradition of sportsmanship, and it is, most assuredly, the responsibility of all of the participants from junior showman to dog show superintendent to uphold this tradition and pass it along unsullied to future participants.

Yet it is a rare occurrence when I can stand by the ringside during a dog show without once overhearing some heated and less than charitable remarks regarding either the judge’s style or selections, or, more commonly, disparaging comments on the qualities of the dogs being exhibited, particularly if the dogs selected for the purple ribbons are not of their own breeding. Perhaps this is in line with the quintessential American disrespect for authority commonly voiced in an equally old sport with cries of “Kill the umpire!” and “Throw the bums out!” Nonetheless, there is a modicum of civility that indulged by all can make our chosen sport more enjoyable for participants and spectators alike. The following comments on Sportsmanship and Etiquette have been excerpted extensively from George Alston’s book for dog exhibitors, The Winning Edge, Show Ring Secrets.

Jim.Are you referring to the judging at the British Sieger event or all the judging that has taken place at the germanic shows here in the UK?I wasnt there at the B.S. but have spoken to several ppl.who i consider have given me an UNBIASED view on the proceedings and ALL have stated that the gsd concerned was in superb condition and moved superbly.EACH PERSON has stated that this gsd deserved to win regardless of the contraversy. We ALL have to respect the judges final descision even if we are disappointed at where our pride n joy are placed.I was very disappointed at my Chiki,s demotion to 2nd place at this years Crufts after leading the class from the start to the very last knockings when suddenly the judge demoted her, advising my handler as to why n i accepted the decision or should i have shouted from the roof tops at wot a crap judge this person was. No,in fact i went n congratulated the lady(overseas exhibitor)which i think was the correct n sportsmanship thing to do.I have only twice felt cheated in the entire time i have been showing, once when Chiki was in junior classes, demoted to 2nd when class was finished, thought maybe chiki to germanic for judge, but in critique was movement????Hard to understand when class was obviously finished n no more moving was done n the 2nd time was at a germanic ch.show n i was demoted to 3rd place from 1st when it was obvious class was finished when photos taken(n this class,s piccie was not in mag)n steward waiting to give out awards. This was a class judged by both judges?????YES I DEFFO.FELT CHEATED AT THAT SHOW.I feel that we now have to consider bringing over foreign judges who havent judged in the UK who dont know the handlers, owners, dogs so its a level playing field or perhaps....HERE,S A TWIST...someone HAS suggested this before....All exhibits nos.put in a hat n each handler pulls out a no.n thats the dog they take in the class......THIS WOULD SHOW TO US ALL IF ITS WHO,S AT THE END OF THE LEAD OR THE ANIMAL AT THE END.TBH.I prefer the general champ.shows with the more middle of the road ppl.not so many clikky ppl. n one is congratulated on ones win w/o.the backstabbing snidey remarks made by some on the german side.I heard one very hurtful remark made in 2007 at crufts when Chiki won her class by one of our handlers, did think of poking this person in the back as i was hiding behind them but thought WOT THE HELL ...JUDGES DECISION,NOT THEIRS.Judges will never please us all,so to me grin it n bear it as it C,EST LA VIE n will continue.Carole S.
