Kaffirdog

I know this is going to be stretching the memory cells, but about 20 years or so ago, David McGowan sent his dogs hip xrays for scoring twice and got two very different results.  Can anyone remember the name of the dog and any further detail, such as the two hip scores?  I know there was an article written in one of the breed magazines, but no idea where to look, if anyone has the article and can send it to me I would appreciate it.

Cheers

Margaret, are you sure you are thinking of David McGowan's dog, and not Sheila Rankin's - that was some 20 years ago.
I will have a look in my back issues of mags etc and see what I can dig up, in case no one else on here can remember.

Definitely not Sheilas dog, he was the one with a stamp normal, but an incredibly high UK hip score, this dog was submitted twice to the BVA, not sure if it was under the same name both times or if it was under two names and everyone who can remember it so far is sure the dog belonged to David McGowan.  I seem to remember the dog was in Scotland, maybe something to do with Miss Moncreiff of Moncreiff?, could be wrong, but if he was one of the X litter v Grundel he would have been born in 1989 so in that case, this would have been 1990 or 1991 most likely.

It was David Mcgowan who sent the hips in for a second time to the BVA. It was the same dog and same xray plates. The result was quite a significent difference, I am not sure but  by a margin of about 10. The dog in question was submitted under a different name and following the results David was highly criticized by Malcolm Willis. David, who was a supporter of having hips scored was trying to show the scheme was flawed because when dogs were resubmitted (owners not happy) they always came back with only a very slight difference. After quite a heated debate between David and Malcolm plus photo`s and scores in one of the magazines nothing ever came of the situation. If I can find the article I will forward it on.

Thanks John, can you remember the name of the dog by any chance?  I don't suppose there is much anyone could have done about it apart from maybe some retraining of the scrutineers to try to get more consistency.  If you can find the article I would really appreciate it.

Just shows how things that seemed very high profile at the time soon slip away to nothing with the passage of time.

Joyce

The dog was Kayards Cent a Held v Hirschel son....first hip score 17-1 ..total 18- taken on 20/7/90  ...then  15/10/90 hip score 5-0 total 5

The way I read it the dog was xrayed twice

Thanks Joyce, working from memory I nearly got it right, with the dates of the 2 xrays being different and knowing what we know now many years later the positioning of the Xrays can play a big part in the readings and eventual scores. I am not sure but I think when you resubmit to the BVA it has to be the same plates which get read again by another person. And as I pointed out there is seldom little diffence in the outcome. Maybe this is why David did the xrays again but with a different name of dog. It was all very interesting at the time.
