Why do they 'tie' though, what does this do? Forgive my ignorance.

I'm not familiar with the actual mechanics of it all, and of course, this begs the question, why does this only happen in dogs, wolves and other canines? Other animals manage to reproduce just fine without a tie.
The animals are obviously very vulnerable during the tie, so it's hard to understand how this could have an evolutionary advantage.

As far as WHY dogs tie, that's a mystery to me, since impregnation can occur in dogs without a tie.
