Oh heavens, what a thing to happen! I also pray your little girls pull through, & God bless Brenda for being such a good mom, and you as well for being so quick & watchful. May you & yours be restored to health. And Godspeed to the dear little boy, God bless his tiny soul. jackie harris

Hope Brenda and the remaining pup who was bitten, will pull through. Sorry about your situation.
I had a cobra come in via the backyard and my 14-month old female GSD kept him/her contained, till the security took it away. Luckily she, nor our Lab or other GSD pup did not get bitten.

I am so sorry for your loss. They are in my prayers.
I am one of the odd ball people who are ok with snakes and I have a healthy respect for the poisonous ones. You are very correct in saying that the snake acted in defense. Canines are a predator to snakes, especially during drought times.
I am so very sorry for you.

Tidbit of advise: Usually if you have 1 copperhead, there is another within 1 - 2 acres. Sulfur is the best deterrent around the home with animals. You should be able to get this at a local feed store or maybe a Lowes (or something similar). It does not take much, but you will need to have a complete circle.
I recommend putting it around the base of your house and kennels. If you have any outdoor water features/pond, put it around those too.
This is the time of year snakes start hiding in the nooks and cracks, preparing for the winter.
If you find you have a bad infestation of poisonous snakes, sometimes a large King snake will work as a territorial deterrent . King snakes eat the rodents and the poisonous snakes (they are not poisonous themselves). They are a snake though; if cornered, they will bite.

fawndallas, thank you for the advise. I don't hate snakes and I usually don't kill them. This was my first enconter with a poisenes snake and I lived here for 17 years (came from Germany).
We have many King snakes here and I leave them alone. I will certainly take your advise and get Sulfur.

Birgit, I want to commend you for not only taking care of business- you had no choice but to kill that snake at that moment- but especially your understanding attitude toward the snake as a cornered animal. Everyone- you, your dogs, the snake, just acted as instinct dictated at that moment- there is nothing you could've/should've done differently. Hopefully, fawndallas' sulfur idea will work and you will never have this tragedy repeated. Your remaining pup and her mother are in my prayers and thoughts. I'm so sorry for your losses.
