Birgit, I'm so sorry that the Oxana wasn't able to fight off the effects of the bite...poor baby.  It is encouraging that Olira was willing to eat even just a little, and the fact that her GI tract has resumed peristaltic activity is a good sign as well.

As for going out into the fields with your dogs again, remember that this tragedy happened only because, as you noted, the snake was cornered and had no choice but to defend itself.  In an open field, that isn't going to be the case.  It should still be safe for you all.

Thank you to everyone.  Olira is still improving.  She is not over the hill yet but I can tell she wants to eat.  I offer her very small meals of very soft food and she tolerates it well.  Drinking from a syringe.  Her face and neck is still very swollen so I know it must hurt her to swallow.  I am still giving her fluids as instructed by my vet.  I know my vet and his staff fell in love with these guys as they call and check on them.  Mom is also doing great.  I don't think I can ever place this little girl if she recovers.  She will have to stay right here with me in my bedroom.

Sending prayers and healing thoughts to Olira.
I will definitely be getting some sulfur -- is it harmful to dogs/cats?  I have previously used mothballs around my mailbox, the bluebirds nest in the paper slot each year, and I want to protect them from snakes. But perhaps the sulfur is more environmentally friendly.

Praying this little girl pulls through.  So sorry for the loss of your two little ones.
Glad Brenda is better.   This little girl will make it!  She's got a strong will!
Still praying for her to be okay.
