Bhall, so sorry for the two that didn't make it and so happy and relieved for the two that did. The survivors have you to thank for being alive. Your reaction to the snake was unbelievably quick, smart, and courageous. I can't believe how you immediately put the snake out of commission with a pooper scooper! You are very lucky to be alive. When you looked under the ramp, the snake could have nailed you right in the face.
You are right to be worried about future bites, and not just for the dogs. North Carolina is the #1 state for copperhead bites:
http://www.thetimesnews.com/articles/north-35718-holes-first.html
Although snakes usually bite only when cornered, cornered includes coming close to stepping on one because you didn't see it. So what to do?
Ideally, you could get a honey badger or a pack of mongooses. Those guys are hell on snakes. If you haven't seen the viral honey badger video, here it is (not recommended if the s-word and f-word bother you):

More realistically, you can build a snake fence; directions at:
http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/gaston/Pests/reptiles/snakefnc.html
You also want to get rid of anything that attracts snakes, such as mice and woodpiles and other hiding places. There's some good snake-be-gone info at:
http://npic.orst.edu/pest/snake.html#repel
This has a good link to an article about snake repellents like sulfur. Unfortunately, these repellents don't seem to work.
It's also worth having your dogs go through snake avoidance training. You should be able to find someone in your area who does this. It's not foolproof, but it does reduce the risk.
I hope some of this helps.
