I had a similar incident with my dog, I think at around 6 months, but it was an adult neighbour that he went after. The dog raced across the yard to the road and scared the woman by barking. So I know how it feels.

The only thing I would say is that the dog is only 21 months...might yet mature to be more discriminating. I think up to about 3 years one needs to be more careful.

how much socalizing has this dog had?  also you say she was always off leash when you took  her for walks, right there is one of your problems as leader ship goes. i dont think she has any boundaries, if she ran across the street, i am surpise she did not get hit by a car. also  she is also maturing into an adult did you think about this and this is when the temp will start to change into an adult mind set, so you will  have to watch her.  also what did you do when this happen besides just calling her back? yes i really think you need to get some help, she is still young enough to fix any bad  problems. dont give up on her yet.

Got my dog evaluated by two different professionals.

Sound dog, well-mannered, obedient, extreme prey drive, extreme ball drive, extreme working drive.  One of the guy said "please don't tell me she is spayed" (she is spayed, she is a family dog...).  I did a good job with that dog even if I am no expert.  Trixx, for socialization when she was a pup, she has been around kids, dogs, ducks, horses, cows, sheeps, schools, big traffic, woods, boats, tractors,... name it.  She didn't take the plane but I brought her near the airport so I guess it counts ???

I have been doing basic on leash training since last Monday + everyday training like usual (tracking, sleigh, running, ball,...)  I will keep on working with her just like I've been doing over the last 19 months and my leash will be back on when I am outside even if she is always besides my left knee, I learned a lot from that !  My plan : go on with training her, loving her, and forgiving me for not knowing everything.  But I know I can get help anytime if needs be.

I just looked at a video on that forum with a police K9 biting a TV reporter.  I guess sometimes experts should return to basic, not only beginners.

Thanks to some of you for your very good advice.

Good for you for seeking out experienced help and having someone explain your dog's genetics and drives to you.  It sounds like you now have a plan of action and it sounds like a well grounded one.  Good luck and kepp us updated on how she's doing!

Way to go Vero. Hey I am also new to WL GSD, learning every day it is always such a treat to see your dog progress in training. But sometimes mistakes are made you learn from them and carry on. Best of Luck!

Really happy to hear you sounding so upbeat now!  She sounds like a fabulous dog and I think you are going to have a wonderful relationship, you clearly love her.

Maybe you could find a club where you can indulge in some training which she will enjoy, maybe tracking/herding with the drives she has. You could find it very rewarding and it will satisfy an innate need in her.

Best of luck with her, and keep us posted.

Fortunately, the kid stood and the dog stopped and barked...
Had the kid decided to run away, the dog would have chased after her and bit her...
Typical prey instinct...and you said that she has lots of prey...

Good luck with the leash training, and training in general...

Joining a Club in your area might not be such a bad idea...

Aadilah
You cannot predict what the dog would have done, nobody can. In any case, it didn't happen and the OP is doing the right thing.
