Female 1 year old has had first heat (a normal heat) 2 months ago. is in a breeding kennel/home. Other females like to pin her and make her roll on her back so they can smell her and make her submit.  they are not aggressive with her more along the lines of very interested in her smell. This behavior has been going on for months. She is however, aloof and indifferent to their dominating. She is also pretty hard according to her owner. The real issue is a very experienced stud on the property shows extreme interest in her currently and has for about 2 weeks. She shows no signs of heat other than studs reaction to her. She has no bleeding, swelling or flagging; nothing. I think that rules out split heat as well. But the stud follows her around as if she is in standing heat. The young female will not have any part of him. There are other females that she plays with running with them that the stud shows no interest in. The breeder was going to take her to have her prelimbed hips and elbows next week. She is concerned that the strange hormones will cause her joints to look too loose.
I feel as if this is all part of her just still maturing. But I do not know the impact of how it will affect xrays.
I am sure breeders who have been breeding for a long time know how to explain this. Any answers? Will it affect xrays? Should the breeder wait until the female is a little older for prelimbs?

She could have an infection, imbalances in the urine can be attractive to other dogs as can a damp vulva.

I disagree that the other females are not aggressive with her if they are pinning her to the ground. This behavior needs to stop. Ive seen females come into heat and not breed because of their position in the pack so to speak. I'm confused why the owner would allow this to happen over and over.

I'm guessing they want to prelim the hips now to breed her before 2?

Well they very may well be being aggressive towards her I don't know I did not personally see it. My friend has been dealing with dogs for many years so I have to believe what she says. i did see how the stud was behaving towards her and thought it was very peculiar. It really is none of my business if my friend is relaxed with her dogs. I may not agree with all that she does but she is a good dog owner overall. I just thought somebody may have seen or dealt with a young female where other dogs behave differently towards it like this. My friend said she is going to have to take her to the vet to have her hormones checked and see if there's anything wrong with her.

I also agree with Bhaugh, the owner should stop this type of behaviour, it is not fair to that poor young female!  As her friend, you should suggest getting that under control. I would never let my dogs pin each other to the ground.

I agree that she may have an infection. Some males go by blood being present, as in some type of infection or pyo. I would have her urine and a culture of her vagina done to make sure.
I also agree that the owner should not let the other dogs submit her at all.

Pyometra? about 6 wks after a cycle would be the timing. Could be why the male thinks something is going on.

Bloodwork would show a very elevated WBC and an x-ray of her uterus would show if it's full of pus. Hope not.

Why is that just because someone xrays their dogs at a young age it is automatically assumed they are wanting to breed before 2yrs old?  I always get our dogs xrayed at around 6 mos. and I have no intentions of breeding her than I have to fly to the moon.  People shouldn't be so quick to jump to conclusions and assume things without knowing all the facts. Now witht that said, I agree I do not think the female should continually be allowed to be put in the position of being dominanted even though she shows no problems with it.  Its not uncommon for young females to develop infections after their first heat. However, could she possibily be having a split heat?  We had a female that had split heats all the time. She would come into heat and bleed for a wk but not swell. Two months later she would come back into heat and swell normally. Sometimes the swelling would happen on the heat. If I wanted to breed her I would breed her on the heat that had swelling.   I only bred her 4 times in 8yrs than was spayed.  When she was bred, we always had a litter. None of her female puppies ever had the problem.

Just wanted to share my personal experience! Wink Smile
