Blitzen, I understand your view, however, it isn't only this line is better than that line. The WL dogs have their fair share of imbalance which is not conducive to the soundness of the breed in general, as does any other 'line'.

@ student; Posting balance on two demential format can't be done. However, posting pictures of dogs considered to be balanced ( as Eddy requested) can be achieved in two detentions.

Joan, Eddy doesn't care about any of that.

They already are Eddy--if you get out and about and start LOOKING at things, you'll see.  I absolutely believe in a balanced dog and they are out there.

Also to make a comment on the hips and extreme angulation--if you read theGerman Shepherd Dog Club of America's Magazine, The Review, I bet you would be surprised how many good and excellents there are in a lot of the showlines. I'm afraid I don't buy into anglation causing HD....................

Overangulation doesn´nt cause HD. As far as I know, there isn´t any study that could show that showline dogs have more HD as WL.
In fact overangulation causes problems in working, especially in jumping. That´s a physical fact.
In Germany the breeders and judges prefer well angled hindlegs, the overangulation isn´t wanted any more.
I think that´s a good way, to come back to what you called a "rounded" GSD.

And here we go again...
As long as Eddy doesn´t participate in any clubs, trials, or shows, he´ll NEVER know about the German Shepherd.
He will always look at the extremes, be it working- or showline.
He´ll never know about the thousands of "well rounded" German Shepherds, because he won´t find them with his keyboard.
Go out there and stop blaming all the excellent breeders and dogs - but I´m pretty sure you won´t even recognize a good dog in front of you...

This will not turn into a WL v SL.......full stop.

by SitasMom on 24 June 2013 - 16:06

some of us do breed for well rounded GSD's.
good working dogs which are not over angulated.

not duds, not hyper........balanced drives for sport or work.
not short croups, not short upright forearms.........balanced angles which are not extreme.

ACTUALLY there is a study going on at the moment through U of NC measuring angulation and taking OFA style Xrays to measure the correlation between angulation and HD. The study is open to all GSD w/AKC papers, though I don't know if they are still accepting dogs.

Melba, when you get more info on that study would you share it please? I am very interested in reading more about that. Thank you.

Hey Eddy, It has been a while since I have seen one of your posts. I hope all is fine. Were you able to attend that trial in your area back in the spring or check out the club holding it? I am kind of curious how a Canadian knows what is being produced here in the USA and comes to the conclusion that you have reached? Do you have a dog yet?
