NC State College of Veterinary Medicine Seeks Participants for Canine Orthopedic Study

2013 June 7

by David Green

Owners of German Shepherds and Labrador Retrievers are invited to have their animals receive a free orthopedic examination as participants in a NC State University study that will provide important information on the popular breeds.

The non-invasive clinical study, conducted by specialists at the Veterinary Health Complex, involves a single visit during which x-rays and physical measurements of the participant’s hind limbs will be taken. The data collected from some 80 dogs will provide clinicians at the College of Veterinary Medicine with additional information on the development of hip issues in the two breeds.

The focus of the study is the attachment between the dog’s spine and pelvis. It is currently unknown how the angle of this joint—which varies widely in dogs of the same breed—affects other joint angles and the development of the skeletal system in the hind limbs.

To be eligible, participants must be American Kennel Club-registered German Shepherds and Labrador Retrievers between the ages of one and eight that do not have a history of orthopedic issues. The examination, x-ray, and measurements will take about one hour and the study will be conducted throughout the summer.

For more information or to enroll in the study, interested owners should contact Dr. Kyle Mathews, professor of soft tissue and oncologic surgery, at 919.513.6303 or Sarah Wall at 919.513.6376.

The more I think of this the more I believe Eddy is just expressing his opinion based on his point of view, this may signal a progression in his understanding of the breed. Eddy there are a lot of breeders trying to breed a well rounded dog based on their perspective, whether they have succeeded or failed depends on your perspective. Working temperament, working structure, without being too crazy, it's there in American bred dogs, I've seen it.

Mark what a breath of fresh air--very good post.
Eddy, I am not always angry nor am I an angry person. I am very blunt and realistic. I take it you were talking to me?  I sincerely hope that you are taking advantage of everything you are learning....................it is like school in a way--I look forward to seeing one of my faves post with good info. I have learned lot on this board. Even in some of the pissing matches. Some of the things that are said onhere it's like wow I didn't need to know that or even want to, but tuck it in your mind because 20 years down the road you may have a situation that matches that. Then you say oh yeah now I know why this was said or believed or whatever..............

at least the guy is trying to develop a picture in his mind BEFORE he just hands his money over to yet another dog breeder con-artists rip-off merchant. this type of dialog may just be his preferred learning style, i mean what harm is he doing?? don't like it, ignore.

i have not really read many of his posts so i could be talking straight out my butt but i tend to empathize with the newbs and i happily challenge the experts thinkin they are all this and that all the time.

wasn't directed at you vonissk.

thank you vk4gsd for your understanding.

@Vonnisk.....why would some information make you think that you didn't need to hear that or WANT to hear that ? Not trying to be funny, but very few statements or information posted on this forum is in a vacuum. By that I mean you can usually compare information with reality and come up with pretty sound thoughts on the breed if you leave emotions out and are objective. I have said on this forum that there are American breeders of American dogs(older lines) that are very well balanced. They are there, BUT I also realize that they are no longer the norm.....so when somebody says or thinks that American lines are no longer balanced or producing good working dogs, they are not completely right, but they are more right than wrong. Now I don't get all huffy and say they are bashing, because what they are saying has more truth than not. ( so I don't look like a an imbecile defending a position that is often not seen much these days) I do realize that although they see one side of the equation, there is another side that they don't see, albeit not as prevalent as what they see. We need to be aware of both sides in my view, so we can encourage and support the American breeders that are doing it right, but we do a disservice to the breed by screaming bias or bashing when people point out that way too many American breeders don't breed for balance, because these apologist give cover for these breeders to continue to breed these unbalanced dogs that no longer work or perform.
So, I think that folks like Eddy have a lot to learn....no question about it, but truthfully, I find his premise and direction he is seeking to be sounder than many of his critics. For although he has a lot to learn, he is traveling in the right direction, the breed in America is generally in the shape it is because the direction of many in the forefront lost their way....and you can hear their rationalizations right on this forum....usually against Eddy!
