I'll be surprised if these mastiff-type heads disappear in the future unless the SV wages a campaign against them and orders judges to not reward them in the show ring. Personally I look for them to become more common and more extreme and gain acceptance as correct the same way roachy toplines have been integrated into the showlines and touted as correct.  Evidentally the SV likes heavy "stallion heads", think they are correct for the breed.  I haven't seen photos of all the 2012 Va's from the BSZS, but I'm guessing there weren't many without domey skulls and a lot of stop. It will take many generations of selective breeding to get back to a more refined head which will mean not using Va dogs as much as they are used today.  Not likely to happen.

These heads ARE health concerns, they are not just cosmetic.

BTW "these" heads are faulty in many ways other than just being "lippy".

Ksorry, some things are likke jibberish from this I-pod, extra letters and all, it's almost like reading my sisters posts, lol)
What I tried to say is, THAT dog is terrible, AS A, German Shepherd.
That is everything wrong with the breed.
I think when most are seeking blocky head, THAT is NOT what they have in mind.
I would be pissed...

What bothers me is that the SL people will claim they ARE breeding according to the standard. I've seen 'the standard' used to justify everything from the bitchy heads and exaggeratedly long upper thighs of the American dogs to the frog rears and chow heads (no, used to be chow, now it's mastiff...) of these dogs.

It's gotten so I just roll my eyes every time I see that claim on someone's website.

Edit: just saw this dog in the ads at the top of the page. He's V-rated, too. Look at those jowls!

The standard is clear about the ideal head - taut lips, not much stop. It evens defines the size of the head, length and breadth of muzzle as compared to height at withers. Wedge shaped muzzle when viewed from above. Nowhere is the term "blocky" used and coarse is specifically discouraged.

Loose flews are very common in many breeds, They are ugly, can lead to health issues, but I don't think loose flews alone are precursors to or the result of a mastiff-type head. I see them in ASL's too and it's rare to see one of those dogs with a coarse, overdone head. They are just a small part of the equation.

Looking at the dogs on the original Chinese site,  this one appears
to be by far the worst specimen, noticibly of heavier type all through
in addition to what's wrong with just his head.  The site's owners do
not seem to be making a particular virtue of him, in terms of the
Google translation anyway;  but they are mating him regularly, and there
are a couple of photos of young pups on there with already very heavy
AND WRINKLED heads.  So maybe there has been a little Sar Pei or
mastiff tinkering ?  Whatever.  Yes it's wrong, yes it does not look very
healthy, and yes it isn't within the Standard  (one of the problems of Standards
is some things are not specifically PROSCRIBED AGAINST, cos no one
thought they would ever exist !  All I could pick out was the bit about excessive
lips, and I  was hardly excusing same !)

Clearly there seems to be something of a preference in China - or at least the
Beijing area - for this style of GSD at present.  I do hope that it won't spread
elsewhere,  even where there is some resemblance in other countries with
bigger heads being placed, personally I believe that's not entirely comparable.
The thing is though, why would any Judge worth their salt put up such a specimen,
or pass it through a Survey ?  If they refused point blank, this could stop the trend
as soon as it starts.  We are in their hands (again).  Any Surveyors or Judges
especially SV qualified ones reading this thred,  p-l-e-a-s-e take note...

Judging by the Va BSZS winners, I think that the correct head ship has already sailed. Heads are not as extreme as this dog, but they still have too much stop, domey skulls, dish faces and are not dry. What's next? Who'd a thought 30 years ago that roachy toplines would be the norm today?

I don't like any of the ones on this thread here except Vegas Feetback, while heavy, that dog seems balanced with tight feet and lips, but, pictures can deceive.

The Chinese dogs I really thought were a hoax before finding the kennel online. I would still love to get hold of a pedigree for these dogs.

by Blitzen on 20 July 2013 - 18:07

I don't want to say what I think of Feetback specifically unless I know his owner is OK with that.
